Sandy Kurt

Sandy Kurt is an Italy-based Bosnian artist who is inspired by the intricate simplicity of Islamic geometry.

She began her journey in 2016 and soon specialised in miniature geometry, using watercolour as a key medium. Through Islamic geometry she has found a long lost bond with her motherland and traditions.

She also practices geometric drawing as a meditation to relieve stress. She believes that everyone can find peace in Islamic geometry and in art in general, one of the key reasons why she started teaching workshops around Europe.

“The offered artwork is inspired by and dedicated to anyone who, like me, is a child of two realms colliding into one person. Growing up I’ve always felt different from other people: not Italian enough to be Italian, nor Bosnian enough to be Bosnian. Where do I belong? Where is home? Is it a place or is it people? We live in a world in constant change. Where you live today probably differs from the country you were born in and will even more probably differ from the place where you will live and/or die tomorrow. War, love, work, adventure, need for change are only few of the many reasons why we leave our homes. But I’ve learnt that I’m part of a collective of experiences, memories, sacrifices that makes me unique, that makes everyone of us unique. No matter where we are, culture, spirituality and history shape who we are.” - Sandy Kurt.

During Sandy’s long research in 2018 about Islamic art in Bosnia, she came across a magnificent 6-fold pattern in the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“‘The simplicity and beauty of this pattern captured my attention right from the beginning. The idea for this piece was to create a connection between my artistic style which is miniature (who I am now) and the simplicity of Islamic art in Bosnia (my roots).” - Sandy Kurt.
