‘Belief’.

Inspired by the second half of the 76th verse from the Holy Qur’an chapter ‘Al-An'am’ (‘The Cattle’) [6:76].

Arabic: فَلَمَّا أَفَلَ قَالَ لاَ أُحِبُّ الآفِلِينَ

Translation: But when it went down, he said, "I love not the things that go down."

Transliteration: Falamma afala qala la ohibbu al-afileena.

Physical Description

Dark red calligraphy ink using Nastaʼlīq script on royal yellow ahar paper.

Nastaʼlīq is amongst the most fluid calligraphy styles for the Arabic script and was developed in Iran in the 14th and 15th centuries. It has short verticals with no serifs, and long horizontal strokes. It is also the main calligraphic script used in writing the Persian alphabet, Urdu alphabet and traditionally the predominant style in Persian calligraphy.

Ferhat Kurlu

Ferhat Kurlu (b. 1976, Fatsa, Turkey) is undoubtedly one of Turkey's most renowned and successful calligraphers.

Ferhat Kurlu's first experience of calligraphy was in studying the Rik'a script under Muzaffer Ecevit Bey in 1993. In 1996 he met master Hasan Çelebi under whom he began learning Thuluth and Naskh scripts, receiving his ijaza (diploma/license) in 2000 at IRCICA.

Ferhat Kurlu has won numerous awards and his calligraphy graces the fountains and domes of many mosques around the world.

He currently resides in Istanbul where he continues to practise calligraphy, teaches, and serves as an Imam-hatip of the Nişantaşı Meşrutiyet-Hamidiye Mosque in Istanbul.
